Gregory Torres, a 6-4 freshman opposite hitter from Caguas, Puerto Rico, who is a member of the North
Greenville University men's volleyball team, will travel to Cali, Colombia over the Thanksgiving holiday to
represent his country at the Junior Pan American Games volleyball tournament.
Torres was notified in early November that he had been selected for his nation's top U-23 national team
for this first of its kind event sponsored by the Pan American Sports Organization, which is a member of
the International Olympic Committee. Eight nations from the Caribbean, Central and South America will
compete in the event which begins on Saturday, November 27. Puerto Rico opens competition against
Guatemala, and then plays the host nation on Sunday.
"How great is it to have one of your players have the opportunity to play in a top level international
volleyball event," said NGU Head Coach Dr. Fred Battenfield. "Gregory is certainly one of the top hitters
from Puerto Rico and is decidedly deserving of this honor. We're excited for him as he gets to travel to
South American to also represent NGU!"
"I'm a little nervous right now because this will be my first international competition for Puerto Rico,"
Torres said. "But I'm also very excited to have the chance to go play for my country."
North Greenville begins its eighth season of intercollegiate competition on Tuesday, January 11 traveling
to Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN.
