Winston-Salem, N.C.—The North Greenville volleyball team
evened its record at 7-7 on Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15)
decision over the Winston-Salem State Rams in a tune up match for this
weekend’s weekend double-header.
The Crusaders never trailed in set one. NGU led the match
17-10 before the Rams stormed back to pull to within one (19-18). The Crusaders
never panicked and rattled off 6-2 run. The Crusaders used a Megan Steading
service ace, and two Ram errors to seal the set one win.
Winston-Salem showed some resiliency in the second set and
jumped out to an early lead, but the Crusaders stayed focused and gained an
early 10-6 advantage. Rebekah Mayes led the attack at the net for NGU in the
second set scoring 3 of Crusaders first 10 points. Mayes finished the day with
13 Kills to lead the team. Mayes
also added two serving aces to her game resume’. The Crusaders biggest lead of
10 came at the end of set two when Elizabeth James closed the deal with NGU’s 2nd
ace of the game.
The third set of the game was much of the same as NGU
dominated for much of the contest. NGU ensured its self its seventh win of the
season by putting together a 7-3 run to close the match. Leading the Crusaders
was senior setter Abigail Frame who posted 34 assists and 2 service aces.
Samantha Del Toro had 10 kills and four block assists while Megan Steading led
the team with 8 defensive digs. Steading also had two services aces.
Tuesday night’s game wrapped up a 10 game road trip, which
also included multiple matches at USC Aiken and at Lees-McRae. The Crusaders
will return for the first time since September 1st to take on Queens
University of Charlotte on Friday night. NGU will follow up its match with the
Royals with a Saturday afternoon match with Pfeiffer. Two wins this weekend
would put NGU’s conference record at 3-1.
