NGU's bid for upset comes up short at #2 Valdosta State

Valdosta, GA – North Greenville's bid for an upset fell short on Saturday as the Crusaders fell to #2 Valdosta State 31-21 in Gulf South action. 
 

The Basics 

  • Location: Bazmore Hyder Stadium (Valdosta State University) 
  • Records: North Greenville 4 – 6 (1 – 4) | #2 Valdosta State 9 – 0 (6 – 0) 
  • Attendance: 4,781

How it Happened 

  • First Quarter: North Greenville struck first when Kaelan Riley trotted in from six years out. Riley's touchdown capped a six-play drive for NGU.  
  • Second Quarter: The Blazers scored 21-points in the second quarter including 14 unanswered to take the lead. A Riley to Logan Byrd touchdown pass evened the score briefly at 14 but Valdosta State's quick strike offense scored just before half to make it 21-14. 
  • Third Quarter: VSU extended the lead to two-scores in the third with the lone touchdown of the frame. Seth McGill ran it in from two-yards out to make it 28-14, NGU trailing. 
  • Fourth Quarter: The Blazers tacked on a field goal with 7:03 left in the game, padding a 17-point lead. North Greenville lone score of the second half came with 5:22 left on the game clock when Riley scored his second rushing touchdown of the day, making it 31-21.  

Inside the Box Score 

  • Cale Swift had one of his best days on the ground, running for 113-yards on a game high 21-carries. The Crusaders ran the ball 39-times among four different players. Riley finished with 35-yards on seven carries and a pair of scores. He also threw for a touchdown. 
  • Logan Byrd had one reception for 21-yards and a score. Christian Bruce led the Crusaders with three catches for 54-yards. 
  • Deandre Mack led the defense with nine total tackles while Ethan Alexander finished the day with eight stops. 
  • Kameron Burton had his best day as a Crusader with a pair of interception to go along with eight stops. 
  • Eddie Martin led the team with 1.5 backfield tackles. Bryson Capps and Termaine Epps both had one stop in the backfield. 
  • Shane Amerson had a punt-block for NGU.

The Crusaders wrap up the 2021 season in Younts Stadium as they host Shorter University.
