Crusaders Dominate Benedict in Road Series Sweep

The North Greenville Crusaders moved to 3-1 for the season after 9-1 and 17-0 victories over the Tigers of Benedict College in Colunbia, South Carolina. NGU dominated the day, recording 29 hits while holding the Tigers to 3. Jaelin Griffin and Marissa Tyndall scored wins as the starting pitchers while Brianna McRae had a day to remember with 5 hits including 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. Jenna Hewes also recorded 5 hits including 3 doubles.

Game One - 9-1 NGU

Jaelin Griffin began game one as the starting pitcher. After a slow start for both teams, Benedict would strike first in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI double. North Greenville would wake up in the top of the 3rd with four runs scored, including a bunt single by Claire Gilmore that scored two runs due to an error, an RBI walk by Brooke Wade, and an RBI single by Carmen Silvester. After a scoreless 4th inning, the Crusaders added to their lead in the top of the 5th when Aschlyn Hutto's RBI single was followed up by an RBI double by Brooklyn Stone. In the 6th, NGU would add to their lead even further when Brianna McRae hit a pinch-hit home run to right field to bring in two runs. Makayla Brackett capped off the game with an RBI single. Marissa Tyndall, who relieved Griffin in the 5th, pitched a three up, three down inning to end the game due to mercy rule.

Game Two - 17-0 NGU

With a solid outing in game one, Marissa Tyndall returned to the mound to start game two. NGU would get right to work with the bats, opening up the game with seven runs in the 1st including five RBI doubles by Brianna McRae, Jenna Hewes, Claire Gilmore, Aschlyn Hutto, and Brooklyn Stone. NGU would add four runs in the 3rd thanks to an RBI single by Emily Hill. That was followed with a two-run home run by Hutto to make the score 11-0 in favor of the Crusaders. An RBI groundout by Hill added another run to the scoring column in the top of the 3rd. NGU would then put the final nail in the coffin in the top of the 4th with Grayce Black scoring on a passed ball, a two-RBI single by Kaley Goerlich, and a second home run by McRae that brought in two. North Greenville would hold off the Tigers in the bottom of the 5th to seal the victory and complete the sweep.

 

The Crusaders will continue their busy week tomorrow in Tigerville against the Bulldogs of Wingate University.
