North Greenville Completes Sweep of Opening Tournament

NGU women's volleyball came out of the Virginia State Tournament with a 4-0 record by sweeping both days. The Crusaders won their first match of the day 3-0 against Concord University and their second match 3-2 against King University. North Greenville and King had not faced each other in a nonconference match since October 19th, 2009.

 

Match 1

Set 1 was won by North Greenville, but Concord was able to keep the score relatively close the entire way. With a score of 13-10, the Crusaders then went on a 5-point run to put the set out of reach for the Mountain Lions. NGU went on to win the set 25-19.

Set 2 resulted in a come-from-behind win for the Crusaders. Trailing by as much as 6, NGU fought back to force the set to go into extra points. North Greenville ended the set by scoring 3 in a row to win it 28-26.

Set 3 remained close most of the way. Tied 16-16, NGU scored 9 of the final 13 points of the set, winning 25-20 and taking the match.

Erin Allen continues to play strong in the opening tournament with 14 kills and 35 total attacks.

Sara Miller provided 23 assists and a service ace.

Whitley Kahler continues to rack up digs. She recorded 11 for the match.

Match 2

Set 1 saw a very early lead by King. But North Greenville quickly took the lead and did not give it back up. The Crusaders led by as much as 6 and eventually won the set 25-22.

Set 2 resulted in NGU's first set loss of the season. North Greenville led 6-5, but a run by the Tornado proved to be too much to come back from. King ultimately took the set 25-20.

Set 3 became the story of several momentum swings. The Crusaders began with a 7-4 lead, but King was able to get things going and eventually led 13-12. NGU then scored 12 of the next 15 points. The Tornado put up a fight with 6-straight points, but the Crusaders finally scored the final point to win the set 25-22.

Set 4 was taken by King and forced a 5th set. KU was able to pull ahead early 15-8. NGU went on a 4-point run to get back in the set, but the Tornado dominated the remainder of the set by scoring 8 of the final 9 points to take it 25-14.

Set 5 ended in dramatic fashion. North Greenville trailed 14-12, but came back to tie the set 14-14 and again at 16-16. NGU scored the next point to take a 1-point lead, but King scored next to tie things yet again. The Crusaders went on to score the next two points to finall put the set and the match to rest with a score of 19-17.

 

Upcoming

North Greenville will head to Due West, SC next Friday to participate in the Fleet Classic Tournament.
