Tigerville – There's no let-up when it comes to the Gulf South Conference schedule as North Greenville welcomes the defending national champions in West Florida to Younts Stadium on Saturday night.
North Greenville looks to avoid losing in consecutive weeks but will have to pull off perhaps the biggest regular season win in program history to do so. The Crusaders host a West Florida Team that brings with it a 10-game winning streak dating back to the 2019-season. The Argonauts have won 17 of their last 19-games including their 13-2 record two years ago.
NGU is heading in to the October 9
th matchup having dropped its GSC opener to Mississippi College while West Florida escaped Delta State with a win to remain undefeated while earning its first conference win. The Argonauts trailed by 20 during the game with the Statesman but powered past DSU, setting a program record for largest comeback in the process.
Series History: North Greenville vs. West Florida
West Florida has had North Greenville's number, winning the first two meetings between the two schools. The first meeting between the programs came in 2018 when North Greenville fell to the Argos 26-10 in Tigerville.
The 2019 meeting was much more competitive. North Greenville made its first trip to Pensacola, Florida and took the eventual national champions to the wire but faltered in the end. The Argonauts earned the 17-14 win but needed a pair of missed field goals from the Crusaders to secure the win. A loss to NGU likely would have meant UWF missed the playoffs having fallen to Valdosta State the following weekend.
League of Champions
The Gulf South Conference is widely known for its schedule strength among Division II followers. 2021 Is no different. For the third consecutive season, the Crusaders will host or travel to the NCAA Division II National Champion. In 2019, the Crusaders hosted Valdosta State off of their 2018 Championship.
The season prior, North Greenville played West Florida for the first time following the Argos' loss to Texas A&M Commerce in the 2017 National Championship game. The Gulf South has been represented in four of the last five championships, having claimed two of those titles.
West Florida is currently the top ranked team in Division II Football. The Gulf South has four total teams ranked including #4 Valdosta State, #10 West Alabama, and #13 West Georgia.
