Box Score Belmont, N.C. – A big night for North Greenville on the offensive end was overshadowed on Saturday night as Belmont Abbey edged the Crusaders 89-82 in Conference play.
North Greenville turned in one of its best offensive performances of the season, knocking down 29 of 57 shots from the field. Even more impressive, the Crusaders were 54-percent from three point range (12-22) led by Jalon Cokely who was six of 11. DJ Brooks was nearly perfect from deep going four of five.
It was also a solid night for Abbey on the offensive end of the floor. The Crusaders from North Carolina were just as hot from the floor, shooting 60-percent (32 of 53). BAC was only 32-percent from three point range but were awarded 11-more free throws than North Greenville. Abbey cashed in 17 points from the charity stripe while NGU had just 12.
North Greenville struggled on the inside, being outscored by 20 in the paint (46-26) in the paint. The Crusaders turned it over 19-times which also led to points for BAC as they cashed in 31 points off of miscues by north Greenville.
North Greenville led four times throughout the game and led by as many as eight points, an advantage which came with 13:56 left in the first half. The game was just a three point game through much of the second half but NGU was unable to overtake the Crusaders from BAC. Abbey wrapped up the win with an 8-5 run in the final minutes to earn the victory.
Brooks led the charge for NGU with 22-points and six rebounds while Cokley added 20-points. Jacob Redding had 15-points. Brooks was also solid on defense with five steals.
The Crusaders will take on Bob Jones on Tuesday night in Greenville.
