Crusaders drop heartbreaker to Catawba

Box Score

Tigerville – The 2019 baseball season came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday Noth Greenville was edged by Catawba 4-3 in a 14-inning marathon.

Saturday started just as Friday night’s contest when John Michael Faile broke an early scoreless tie with a solo home run in the visitor’s half of the first. North Greenville would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a hit from Adam Sasser and a sac-fly from Jared Williams.

North Greenville rode the pitching of ace Tucker Burgess who turned in his gutsiest performance of the season. Burgess tossed nine-innings and threw 141-pitches during that time. He struck out two, but surrendered just three runs, only one of which was an earned run.

Catawba’s only three runs in regulation came in the fourth inning when they plated three. Only one of the fourth frame runs were an RBI while two others scored on NGU throwing errors. Even still the Crusaders escaped further harm as Burgess coaxed a fly-out to center field to end the inning, stranding two runners.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the 14th on a bang-bang play at first base. The Indians put runners on the corners with no-outs but Kipp Rollings struck out the next two batters to put up two outs on the board. A chopper to second base would prove to be the difference though as a sliding Catawba runner was called safe as the winning run crossed home plate.

The Indians finished with 14-hits compared to just nine for the Crusaders. Utah Jones and John Michael Faile led the bunch, going 2-4. Jones finished with one RBI while Faile finished with a pair and also scored a run. Jared Williams also finished with two hits and knocked in one RBI.

North Greenville finishes the season 45-11 over and tacked up a 22-5 mark in Conference Carolinas play.
