NGU bested by Limestone in semifinal tilt

Tigerville – The season came to end for NGU men’s lacrosse on Friday evening after falling to Limestone College in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship.

The Basics

  • Score: Crusaders – 14 / Saints – 7
  • Records: North Greenville 8 – 9 / Limestone 11 – 6

How it Happened

  • Hunter Burgett gave NGU the early 1 – 0 lead a minute into the game with an assist from Austin Dixon.
  • The Crusaders would later find themselves down 4 – 2 after the Saints scored three unanswered and a fourth goal with 10:31 left in the first half.
  • The Crusaders got a second goal from Chris Carpenter at 2:33 but eventually evened it at 4 – 4 when Chris Carpenter and Ethan Landreth scored back-to-back goals with 4:51 left on the clock.
  • North Greenville would then come up with a big possession as Chris Wieckhorst took an assist from Alex Proly to make it 5 – 4 before halftime.
  • There was a little too much time left on the first half clock though and the Saints took advantage. Tyler Ponzio scored the game-tying goal with 1:46 left while Cody Solmosy sent the teams into intermission with the Saints leading 6 – 5.
  • The momentum carried over into the second half as the Saints score six consecutive goals to take a 12 – 5 edge on NGU.
  • Ethan Landreth would do his best to keep NGU in the mix with the sixth goal of the game for NGU but Limestone scored two more to put NGU in a 14 – 6 hole.
  • Alex Proly added another goal with 4:21 left on the clock but the clock ran out on the Crusaders and the 2018 season as the Saints advanced to the league championship for the 10th consecutive season.

  • NGU had two players with multiple goals including Ethan Landreth and Chris Carpenter who both had two.
  • Alex Proly and Hunter Burgett added a goal while Chris Wieckhorst tacked on a goal as well.
  • Jaren Szafranski led the Crusaders with three caused turnovers to go along with three groundballs.
  • Logan Bryant led NGU with four grounders while Braeden Dixon also had three with Sky Dupree.
  • Dixon finished the day with seven saves in the net for NGU.
