Tigerville, S.C.—Timisty Nelson dropped a season high 23
points, and Alisha Hope added 19, helping the Crusaders to a 71-58 win over
Lander, halting a five game losing skid.
North Greenville trailed early in the first half, but
grabbed the lead with 16:43 left on a three pointer by Emily Wampler. Wampler’s
three pointer would give NGU a 7-6 lead. The Crusaders would hold the advantage
for the remainder of the game. The Bearcats would keep it close, but Crusaders
would close out the final four minutes of the first half on a 10-4 run, to
extend the advantage to 36-25 after a buzzer beater from Jaquazha Barrino.
North Greenville outshot the Bearcats in the first half,
hitting on 48.8% of its shots from the field, including a 44.4% remark from
beyond the three-point arch. Lander struggled from the field in the opening
period, hitting just eight of their 32 attempts for a 25% performance. The
Crusaders also out rebounded the Bearcats 21-12.
The Crusaders would come out firing to open up the second
half, opening up a 21 point lead on the heels of a 16-6 run that spanned the
opening five minutes of the second frame. Tyler powers would hit two of her
three, three pointers during the stretch, while Timisty Nelson added four
points of her own. The quick 16 point outburst would be all NGU needed.
The Crusaders fended off a late Bearcat run, which cut North
Greenville’s lead to 14. The Crusaders calmly extended their lead back to 21
with 4:42 left in the game. Lander would close the game out on an 8-0 run, but
it wouldn’t be enough, as NGU would cruise to the 13-point victory, evening the
series at one win each. +
The win over Lander improved North Greenville to 2-6 on the
season, while dropping the Bearcats to 4-3. Jaquazha Barrino added 10 points to
the winning effort, while Tyler Powers finished the night with nine points.
Alisha Hope finished a rebound shy of a double double, while Tierra Richberg
finished with two blocks on the night.
North Greenville has two more games before the end of the
2013 schedule, including a December 12th game in Columbia against
Allen University. The Thursday tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm.
