Crusaders Drop Two Matches in Day One of Tournament

NGU women's volleyball fell to Mars Hill and Alabama Huntsville in the first day of the Converse Tournament in Spartanburg, SC. The Crusaders lost both matches 3-0 but did total 58 kills for the day.

Match One

Set 1 - The Crusaders fell behind early in the set but fought back to bring the deficit down to one. However, an 11-1 run by Mars Hill is how the set ended with a score of 25-14.

Set 2 - North Greenville led for the overwelming majority of the match. Leading by as much as 5, it appeared that the match would be tied at 1 set each. However, a 9-3 run by the Lions would put away the second set with a score of 25-23.

Set 3 - A 1-0 lead by NGU would be their only lead of the set as Mars Hill was able to run away with it. The Lions would eventually win the set 25-16.

Katie McManaway led the charge for North Greenville with 9 kills and 20 total attacks.

Annie Beisecker was also productive with 7 kills and 21 total attacks.

Johna Robbins recorded 10 digs and a service ace.

Match Two

Set 1 - North Greenville fell behind early in the set. After fighting back to even the set, a 12-3 run by Alabama Huntsville to finish the set would end NGU's chances of completing the comeback.

Set 2 - The Crusaders led by as much as 5 early on and seemed to have the set in hand. However, the Chargers would go on to score the final 6 points of the set to take it 25-23.

Set 3 - After trailing 5-0, NGU put together a 5-point run as well to even the set. The two teams would trade points for awhile, but a 6-1 run by UAH would prove to be the difference as they would ultimately take the set 25-18.

Erin Allen led the Crusaders in total attacks with 25. She also totalled 5 kills and 6 digs.

Sara Miller provided 26 assists and 4 digs.

Kasie Thomas recorded 21 total attacks, 5 kills, and 5 digs.

The Crusaders will face Valdosta State and Shorter in Day 2 of the Converse Tournament beginning tomorrow at 8:30 AM.
