NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team won its final home match of the season Wednesday night, defeating the North Greenville Crusaders, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-17)
In the beginning of the match, the Crusaders caught the scarlet and gray off guard and came out to a 13-8 lead. Newberry woke up quickly and went on a 13-3 run thanks to Lorena Maia's (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) 10 straight serves and three consecutive aces. NC held their lead and won the opening set, 25-18. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) had her best set of the night in the first earning 12 of her 14 total assists.
Newberry carried their momentum into the second set by gaining the opening lead and never forfeiting it. Leading 9-8, Newberry went on a 10-1 run that all but sealed the set. The Crusaders brought the deficit down to six at one point but Newberry stood strong and won the set, 25-17. Sales had a very efficient set with six kills and no errors on 10 attacks.
The final set was more competitive than the second as the Crusaders k n ew they were in a deep hole. The two teams could not earn a significant lead for the first half of the set and found themselves tied at 15 all. It was all Newberry after that as the scarlet and gray went on a 10-2 run to win, 25-17. Kember Lichtie had a strong final set earning four kills on 10 attacks.
