Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders were able to score a late goal to secure a 1-0 victory over the Eagles of Carson-Newman University. The Eagles were a 2018 NCAA tournament participant and had a national pre-season ranking of 21. NGU endured a powerful Eagle offense, but several blocked shots, as well as a 9-save performance by Brianna Rowe, completed the shutout. Abby Robinson scored the only goal of the match with an assist by Kayla Cruse.
A good defensive performance by the Eagles successfully prevented the Crusaders from putting together effective possessions in the first half. Carson-Newman began as the aggressor, posting the first three shots of the match. NGU would get into the shot column with a headed shot by Ayden Boatwright that was blocked. This would prove to be NGU's only shot of the half while the Eagles would post eleven. Brianna Rowe had a solid half with five saves.
The Crusader defense excelled in the second half as the Eagles were outshot in the half 7-6. In the 78th minute, a corner kick by Kayla Cruse was followed by a header from Abby Robinson that found the back of the net for the first and only goal of the match. The Eagles put together a last-minute possession, but NGU was able to keep the ball away from the goal to complete the shutout victory.
NGU will return to conference play on Saturday, October 12th when they take on the Lions of Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
