Crusaders take game two in split with Mount Olive

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville softball moved to 3-1 in Conference Carolinas play on Friday after splitting a double-header with Mount Olive. The Crusaders bounced back with a 3-1 win following a 2-1 loss in the opener.

Mount Olive scored a run in back-to-back innings of game one to take a 2-0 lead. The Crusaders were held in check for the most part, finishing with just two hits in game. The Trojans broke the scoreless tie in the third inning with an RBI single. Another RBI single in the fourth inning extended the lead to two runs.

The Trojans picked up two RBI singles, but only had five hits on the day as Brooklyn Fort turned in a solid performance in the circle. Fort pitched all seven innings, striking out eight while finishing the game without allowing a single walk to Mount Olive.

North Greenville scratched its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. A leadoff walk set the table for Shayna Finley who continued her hot streak, slashing a double to right center field. Wade would round the bases to score, cutting the UMO lead to one run.

Finley represented the tying run but a sixth strikeout for UMO pitching left her on second base. Finley finished 1-2 on the day as she was pitched around for most of the game, earning two walks. Grace DeBoer accounted for North Greenville’s only other hit

The offenses were equally suppressed in game two as another pair of solid pitching performances allowed for just seven hits combined. Amanda Croffin got the ball for game two, earning her eighth win of the season as a starter. Croffin allowed just one run on three hits during seven innings of work.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as an infield single scratched across their only run of the game. Mount Olive finished with just three hits, but drew three walks off of Croffin. The Trojans stranded four runners and 2-5 with runners in scoring position.

North Greenville also did its damage in the first inning. Shayna Finley led the game off with a single, coming around to score a batter later on Megan Johnson’s left field single, evening the tally at 1-1. Kaitlyn Wagers would come through with two outs with a two run blast to left field to give North Greenville a 3-1 lead.

The three run first ended up being all North Greenville needed, playing solid defense behind Croffin’s solid pitching performance. Croffin and the NGU defense kept the Trojans off the base path for four of seven innings, retiring six batters in a row twice during the contest.

Wagers finished the game 1-2 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the offense. Megan Johnson and Shayna Finley were both 1-3 with a run scored. Johnson tacked on an RBI. Brooke Wade delivered North Greenville’s fourth hit.

The Crusaders will continue a five series home stand on Saturday afternoon with the Barton Bulldogs coming to town. First pitch of the double-header is scheduled for 12pm.
