Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville softball opens up its 2017 season on Friday afternoon as it hosts Chowan University in a double-header with a noon first pitch.

North Greenville is 5-1 against the Hawks over the last three seasons including a sweep in 2016, which included an 8-0 win in five innings. Chowan’s single victory over the Crusaders came in 2014 in an extra inning thriller.

The Crusaders finished last season 9-15 on the road, but were less hospitable in the friendly confines of Jan McDonald Field, finishing with a 16-7 record during the first season in the new facility. The field NGU plays on might only be in its second season of action, but the same can’t be said for the North Greenville roster.

The Crusaders return several key starters and contributors from 2016, including four seniors who are also four-year starters for head coach Sarah Hall. Morgan Roach, Shayna Finley, Meghan Johnson, and Christie Reilly will anchor North Greenville this season as the Crusaders look to win their first Conference Carolinas tournament championship.

Also returning this season is dynamic sophomore Kate Lee, who led the team in batting average as a freshman, swinging for 21-doubles and five home runs, both of which were team highs. Lee was also solid in the field, committing just one error compared to 20-putouts.

Hall also has several returning options in the circle this season as Anna Rodgers, Kayla McCarson and Emily Murphy look to hold down opponent offenses. Anna Rodgers finished the 2016 season with a team leading 2.45 earned run average while McCarson boasts a 3.33 ERA in 77-innings, the most innings pitched by returning hurlers.
