Banner Elk, N.C.—The North Greenville softball team improved to 16-18-1 on the season and 10-8-1 in Conference Carolinas action sweeping the Lees-McRae Bobcats 10-1 and 5-1 in the final regular season double-header of 2013.


Amy Nagel continued hear late season tear on Saturday, going 3-3 with a homer in game one with three RBI’s and run scored. Kimberly Robertson also had a solid first game, going 2-4 from the dish with two RBI’s. Rachel Glazebrook started in the circle for the Crusaders and was once again solid, picking up the win after pitching four innings allowing just four hits while striking out five. Sarah Armstong pitched three innings in relief for NGU striking out four and allowing one hit in three innings of work.

The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in game one platting two runs in consecution innings. Amy Nagel got the Crusaders on the board in the opening frame with an RBI single that scored Kimberly Robertson while Tori Freedman’s grounder scored Rachel Glazebrook (1-2, 2-runs scored) to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. Megan Steading’s run in the second inning on a Lees-McRae error extended NGU’s lead to three. The Crusaders received some more insurance during the inning after Marielena Santos stole home to give the Crusaders a 4-0 lead.

North Greenville kept the scoring streak alive in the third and fourth innings. Amy Nagel’s team leading eigth home run of the season extended the lead to 5-0 before the Crusaders busted the game open in the fourth. North Greenville plated three runs in the inning on three hits including a Robertson two run homer. Nagel picked up her third RBI of the game during the inning with a single to right center field that scored Rachel Glazebrook.

The Bobcats finally dented the scoring column in the bottom half of the fourth inning, scoring their only run of the game on a passed ball, cutting NGU’s advantage to 8-1. Both teams would go scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings before the Crusaders scored two more in the seventh. The Crusaders pounded out 13 total hits in the game one win. Three of those hits came from Sarah Armstrong who was 3-5. Marielena Santos was 2-3 with two runs scored while Megan Steading finished 1-2 with two runs scored.

The Bobcats grabbed the early upper hand in game two, platting a run in the bottom of the third inning, after holding NGU scoreless in the first three innings. Lori Fulmer’s RBI double gave LMC its first lead of the day, scoring Allison Armstrong. The Bobcats finished the day with two runs on 11 total hits. Sarah Armstrong would get the win for the Crusaders in game two, allowing one run on four hits. Cassie Carpenter came in for the Crusaders, giving up two hits in four innings of work.

North Greenville would answer the bell in the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-1 run advantage. Rachel Gazebrook would get the Crusaders on the board with a scoring tying RBI single that scored Kimberly Robertson. North Greenville would take the lead for good, on a three run homerun from none other than Amy Nagel, extending her homerun total to nine. The Crusaders would tack on one more run in the seventh inning on a Robertson sacrifice fly, swelling NGU’s lead to the 5-1 final.

Six starters for NGU picked up a hit in game two. Sarah Armstrong led the way for NGU going 2-4 with two runs scored. Amy Nagel was 2-4 with three RBI’s and a run scored, while Courtney Campbell was 2-3. Rachel Glazebrook also tallied a multi hit game, going 2-3 with an RBI.   

The Crusaders will take a week off before heading to Burlington, North Carolina for the Conference Carolinas post season tournament.
