Cox Sets School Record in First Action of 2023

Winston Salem, N.C. – Tiara Cox headlined the first race day of 2023 for NGU Track & Field setting a school record and a pair of personal bests at the Mondo College Opener.

Cox scored personal bests in both the 60 meter and 200 meter races, finishing 9th and 7th respectively. She finished with a time of 26.71 in the longer of the two races while her time of 7.83 in the 60 – meter set a new school record while also besting her own personal time.

JoAnn Smiling had her best career time on Saturday in the long jump with a distance of 5.19 – meters. Smiling also placed in the 200 – meter, finishing with a time of 26.72 which was good enough for 8th.

Hannah Hill had a pair of fifth place finishes on Saturday in the 200 and 400 meter runs with times of 26.18 and 59.64 seconds.

Smiling, Cox, and Hill joined up with Zoie Justice in the relays to tack on a fourth place finish to cap the weekend. The quartet finished with a time of 4:14.46.

From Coach Stober

"The first meet after Christmas break is always interesting. Overall, I thought did well. We had some really good performances, but there are definitely some areas to improve on as well.

For the women, Tiara had an awesome day. It seems like every time she runs the 60 she either runs a PB or sets a new school record. She did both today. JoAnn opened up the season with an indoor PB in the long jump and ran well in the 200 and 4x4. Hannah Hill had a solid day running well in the 200, 400, and ran an incredible anchor leg for the 4x4.

On the men's side, I thought Hayden had a really good day. He had a breakthrough performance in the 3K and then finished the day off with a solid performance in the mile. Both of our vaulters (Damon and Bryce) cleared 4 meters and set indoor PBs. And both of our hurdlers (Marcus and Jacobie) ran PBs in the 60H.

All of our relays ran well and we were able to finish the meet on a positive note with some exciting 4x4s.

We are looking forward to getting back at it next weekend now that some of the rust from the break has been knocked off."
