The North Greenville Crusaders are officially one win away from the university's first ever NCAA National Championship, defeating the Golden Rams of West Chester University with a final score of 8-5 this evening at Coleman Field in Cary, North Carolina.
Seth Chestnut took the mound for the start, pitching 4.0 strong innings before being relieved by
Thomas Skipper, who received the win with his 2.1 innings pitched.
Brent Herlong pitched the final 2.2 innings, falling just one out short of recording a save. After two scoreless innings to start things off,
Pat Monteith would get the Crusaders on the board with a grand slam after a single by
John Michael Faile and walks by
Ethan Stringer and
Marek Chlup. NGU continued the scoring in the 4th with three additional runs including an RBI ground out by
Gehrig Octavio, an RBI single by
Ethan Stringer, and an RBI single by
Marek Chlup. After West Chester got on the board with a run in the bottom of the inning, the Crusaders would respond with a run of their own by way of a sacrifice fly by
Gehrig Octavio in the top of the 5th. However, the Golden Rams would put up a solid fight in the bottom of the inning with three runs to cut their deficit to four. Things would calm down in the 6th and 7th innings as the score would remain the same. WCU would score an unearned run in the bottom of the 8th, but
Brent Herlong would go on to pitch a three up, three down bottom of the 9th to send North Greenville to the championship series.

- North Greenville will play for a National Championship tomorrow in Cary with a scheduled start time of 7:00 PM. The Crusaders will face the winner of Game 13 between Point Loma Nazarene University and Rollins College. With both teams having a loss in the tournament, either team must beat North Greenville twice while NGU needs just one win to claim the National Championship.
