Shootout Advances Crusaders to Tournament Semifinals

Tigerville, SC - A thrilling quarterfinal resulted in North Greenville advancing to the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinals. While the match officially ended in a 3-3 tie, a shootout was required to determine which team would advance. The Crusaders would successfully convert on all five kicks while an impressive save by Lizzy Luzzi proved to be the difference. North Greenville led the day in shots 18-14.

Recap
  • For North Greenville, the issue seemed to be in doubt early on as the Crusaders found themselves up 2-0 less than twenty minutes into the match. Faith Koedler would get the Crusaders on the board in the 15th minute with an assist by Romee Contreras. Just over four minutes later, a header by Megan Biehl off a corner kick by Kayla Cruse put NGU up 2-0. However, Barton would respond shortly after with two goals in less than a two minute span to tie thing up at 2-2. Late in the half, a foul allowed a penalty kick for NGU, which Molly Platt would make to get North Greenville the lead back.
  • NGU would continue to be aggressive in the second half as they would post the first five shots. North Greenville would get a key opportunity to pull away with a second penalty kick, but the kick would be missed to keep the score the same. Barton's first shot of the second half didn't come until the 80th minute. Their second shot immediately after would result in a goal to tie things up once again. In the final minute of regulation, the Bulldogs would record a shot on goal, but Lizzy Luzzi would come through with a key save to force overtime.
  • The Crusaders would control both overtime periods, leading in shots 6-2. However, three saves by Barton would keep the ball out of the net. Luzzi would post a save of her own in the second overtime period. With time running out, a shootout was required to see which teams would advance.
  • Through the combination of Emma Shearer, Sarah Hazelwood, Romee Contreras, Victoria Valentine, and Shelby Shepherd, North Greenville would convert on all five penalty kicks. Barton's first shot would result in a highlight-worthy save by Lizzy Luzzi, which proved to be the difference as three made shots would not be enough and the Crusaders officially moved on to the semifinals.
