North Greenville Kicks Off Season With Loss to Catawba

NGU Women's Basketball began their 2021-22 season with a 86-56 loss to the Indians of Catawba College in Belmont, North Carolina. The Crusaders struggled overall from the field, ending the game with a .300 field goal percentage. A 21 point performance in the 4th quarter would see the Crusaders end the game on a positive note, but it would not be enough for a comeback.

Recap
  • North Greenville began the game with the first four points, which were scored by Haylee Luttrell and Jykya Bell. The Indians would score the next eight points to take an 8-4 lead. NGU responded with a jumper and a free throw by Tolisha Walker, the Indians would carry the momentum for the remainder of the quarter with a 17-5 run to make the score 25-12 at the end of the 1st quarter.
  • After a three pointer by Jayda Glass to start the 2nd quarter, Catawba pulled away further with ten straight points to lead by nineteen. The Crusaders were able to cut the deficit back down to sixteen, but another run by the Indians would increase their lead to 26 points at halftime with the score 51-25.
  • The third quarter would start off on an even note, but Catawba would eventually score eight straight points to build up their largest lead of the game at 34 points. From there the Crusaders would put up a fight, scoring the next six points. The Indians would respond with the final five of the quarter to make the score 68-35.
  • NGU began the 4th quarter on a strong note with three pointers by Abi Oates and Haylee Luttrell. The two teams would alternate points throughout the remainder of the game, with Morgan Vulpis putting up the final points of the game by way of a three pointer. 
Individual
  • Haylee Luttrell began her senior season with a strong performance, scoring twenty points as well as three assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
  • Jykya Bell scored seven points and posted six rebounds.
  • Tolisha Walker recorded six points and thirteen rebounds.
