Donehew's 19-points lead NGU to first league win

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville women fended off a late Pfeiffer comeback on Tuesday night to notch their first Conference Carolinas win of the season, a 75-68 defeat of the Falcons in Hayes Gymnasium.

The Crusaders seemed to gain control of the game with a 10-0 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter, taking a 47-37 lead. Pfeiffer answered with a run of its own though, using an 11-2 out burst to gain a 50-49 edge. The Crusaders would take the lead once again but the game would head to overtime in a 54-54 tie.

North Greenville would knock down the first shot of the fourth quarter on a Karen Donehew layup. Donehew would then put NGU up by four with another layup as the Crusaders took a 58-54 lead following an empty Pfeiffer possession.

The Crusaders would extend its lead to seven points later in the quarter on a pair of Divonnie Powell free throws making the score 67-60. The Falcons refused to quit though, eventually battling back to cut the NGU advantage to three points with free throws. The two teams would then trade scoreless offensive possessions before a Cameron Carter layup gave NGU a 73-68 lead with 1:09 left. North Greenville would tack on two more points while holding the Falcons scoreless in the final two minutes to seal the league victory.

Karen Donehew was one of three double-figure scorers that fueled NGU’s first conference victory. Donehew finished with a team high in points and rebounds with 19 and seven. Cameron Carter tacked on 15points and three assists while Mychala Wolfe added 13-points. The Crusaders shot 44.8-percent from the field and 40-percent from three-point range.

North Greenville, now 4-7 overall and 1-5 in league play will host King University on January 14th at 2pm.
