Tigerville, S.C.—For the second night in a row, the North
Greenville "Comeback Crusaders" erased a double-digit deficit and freshman Brooks
Walz hit a game winning bank shot on the way to a 68-66 win over Voorhees
College.
The Crusaders never led in the first half and were down by
as many 12. NGU shot 51% from the field in the first period but still trailed
by eight points at intermission.
After fighting back to take the lead in the second half, the
Crusaders fell behind again. With 6 minutes left Voorhees took a commanding 10
point lead. NGU never quit and with 44 seconds left, Karly Stache hit a clutch
three pointer that gave the Crusaders a 1 point lead.
“We have reiterated redemption to the girls this week
because the teams we are playing have beat us already this season,” remarked
head coach Jayne Arledge. “The girls played hard and didn’t quit when we were
down.”
After a free throw tied the game at 66, the Crusaders
inbounded the ball. Karly Stache dribbled to the top of the key and with just
four seconds left on the game clock, passed the ball off to freshman guard
Brooks Walz. Walz dribbled the right of the key and with one second left threw
up a prayer which banked off the glass into the net as the buzzer rang.
“I have never had anything like this happen to me before,”
remarked Walz. “After it went in, it took me a second to realize what had
happened and then the team rushed me to celebrate. It was an awesome feeling.”
The win over Voorhees is NGU’s second in a row and wraps up
pre tournament play. The Crusaders next obstacle will be Southern Wesleyan for
the first round of the NCCAA South Regional Tournament. The Crusaders will work
to defend the South Regional Title won last year at home in Hayes Gynmasium.
The tipoff against Southern Wesleyan is at 7pm.
