CRUSADERS OVERCOME BY DIVISION I UNC ASHEVILLE
Asheville, N.C.—The North Greenville men’s tennis team fell just short of a third consecutive win on Monday afternoon, falling to NCAA Division I member University of North Carolina at Asheville, 6-1 in Monday non-conference action.
The Bulldogs flexed their muscle early in the day, sweeping the Crusaders in doubles competition. Jose Gomez and Rafael Lenz fell victim in the first doubles position dropping a competitive 8-4 decision, followed by an 8-5 loss by Sergio Araujo Filho and Santiago Robles. UNCA completed the pairs sweep with an 8-0 win over Sjors van Eck and Marcelo Yshikawa.
The day didn’t get much better for the road tripping Crusaders as Asheville would go on to take five of six singles frames. NGU’s lone win of the day was secured by Santiago Robles who earned a hard fought 6-4/2-6/10-2 win. The Bulldogs took a 4-0 lead over NGU after Jose Gomez fell in the #1 singles spot 6-/6-3. UNCA assured itself the win in the second singles position as North Greenville’s Rafa Lenz dropped a 6-0/6-1 decision. Sjors van Eck, Sergio Araujo Filho, and Juan Vargas also had little luck, losing by scores of 6-3/7-6, 6-2/6-3, and 6-1/6-3.
North Greenville will host the first of its final two home matches on March 26th when the Bobcats of Lees-McRae travel to Greenville for a Conference Carolinas match with the Crusaders. North Greenville and LMC are scheduled for a 3pm first serve.
