Wingate, N.C. –North Greenville took an early lead against the #12 Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon but were unable to hold on as the Bulldogs earned a 9-3 win in the season opener.
Austin Dixon put North Greenville ahead 1-0 three minutes into the first quarter with his first, and the team’s first goal of the 2020 season. Wingate countered with a pair of scores to take a 2-1 lead.
The Crusaders got another goal a few minutes later when Thomas Cecere’s one-timer evened the score up at 2-2. It was Cecere’s first score of the season and the first assist for Austin Zumbado and came with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
NGU’s offense struggled to get much more in the way of production the final two quarters. The Crusaders got one more score in the second period on Dixon’s second goal of the game but the Bulldogs clamped down defensively and held North Greenville scoreless in the second half.
Wingate paired the second half shutout with four unanswered goals. NGU finished the game with 16-shots on frame but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. Wingate Keeper Edward Erickson finished with 13-saves while Braeden Dixon stopped 15-shots on 24 opportunities for the Bulldogs.
Austin Dixon led the Crusader with two scores while Cecere added one. Dixon also led NGU with four ground-balls in the effort.
North Greenville will head to Jacksonville, Florida on February 8th to take on Lynn University at 12 PM.
