The 2019 NGU Men's Lacrosse team will feature plenty of leadership as six captains have been chosen to lead the team. Chris Carpenter, Hunter Crandall, Austin Dixon, Sky Dupree, Alex Proly, and Jaren Szafranski were the six selections. Combining for a cumulative 3.32 GPA, these six players joined NGU from areas that are not typical hotbeds for lacrosse as three are from the state of Florida, two from South Carolina, and one from Texas. These players have faced a lot of adversity in their careers, and head coach Corey Struss acknowledges the challenges these student athletes have endured.
“These guys have battled since the day they arrive at North Greenville. Not one of these guys has had an easy path to get to where they are right now. This group has overcome so many obstacles (injuries, academic speedbumps, etc.) to get to where they are today. I look at these six young men as pillars of our program, who have been through it all, the ups and the downs. Most of these guys came in or committed to a program that went 1-15 in our first season. Now, just four years later, the expectation is to win a conference championship and play for a National Championship on Memorial Day weekend. It is not easy task to elevate those standards to such lofty heights in such a short time, but they have exceeded expectations and they have set the precedent to win each day in the 2019 season.”
“This group of six have taken the reigns of what it means to be a North Greenville Crusader. They are bought in, have infectious energy, and hold their teammates accountable. This group in particular has set a sturdy foundation for what is to come with our program. There’s an old saying in this line of work that goes ‘You’ll only go as far as your leaders want to take you’, and with that in mind, I can say with confidence that this team is going to give it everything we’ve got, each and every day, to play in May.” - Corey Struss
