Crusaders Drop Final Game Of Series With Pfeiffer

Tigerville, SC – After taking both games of a doubleheader on Friday, the North Greenville University baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game series 16-9 to Pfeiffer University on Saturday afternoon at Ashmore Field.

North Greenville scored the game’s first run early, when John Reinholz recorded a leadoff double and was quickly driven in with an RBI single from Adam Taylor to gain the early lead.

However, Pfeiffer scored 12 runs over the next seven innings of play to open up a 12-1 advantage heading into the final innings of play.

The Crusaders put together seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the eighth to cut into the Pfeiffer lead. Reinholz walked and was followed by a single from Tyler Mitchel to put two runners on with no out before and RBI double drove in a run. Allen Staton continued the comeback with a two-RBI double of his own before Andrew Lawrence drove in a run of his own with an RBI single.

Back-to-back singles by Wheeler Smith and Cuyler McAuliffe loaded the bases before Taylor Hollifield cleared the diamond with a three-RBI double to conclude the scoring for North Greenville and make the score 12-8 in favor of the Falcons.

Pfeiffer tacked on four more runs in the top of the ninth, while the Crusaders got an RBI double from Frank Polino in the bottom of the inning to make the final score 16-9, handing the Falcons the win.

Andrew Lawrence suffered the loss after going just 3 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out five, before Tyler Wirsu pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

Bradley Scruggs also pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits, while Stewart Hunt pitched one inning on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits. Erik Markwat allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of relief as Aaron Gates finished the game pitching 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits.

Taylor led the team on offense, finishing the day 4-for-5 including a double, with two runs scored and two RBI. Staton was 2-for-5 in the game with a double, one run scored and two RBI, while Polino was also 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. McAuliffe was 2-for-4 in the game with a double and a run scored and Hollifield finished 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

The Crusaders (11-18, 4-8 in Conference Carolinas) will take to the road on Monday, March 26 for a matchup with Tusculum College at 6 p.m. in Greeneville, TN.
