Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville volleyball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 2-0 showing on the first night of the 2014 Kickoff Classic. The Crusaders won a pair of 3-0 matches over Johnson & Wales and Truett McConnell.
The Crusaders dominated set one, taking a 25-6 win over the Wildcats. Hannah Lewis led the way for the Crusaders, serving up 11 straight points for the Crusaders while collecting three digs. Yomi Adeyeye and Elizabeth James were even in kills during the opening frame, serving up four spikes a piece. The game remained close at first, as the Wildcats were within two of NGU until Lewis’ string of 11 straight serves. Lewis finished the set with two aces at the service line.
The second set was much of the same as the Crusaders sprinted out to a 9-2 lead. NGU would go on to take a 25-7, led by Taylor Dupes who had three kills. North Greenville would go on to take a 3-0 set win after another convincing win in the third set. NGU took a 25-11 decision in the third, giving the Crusaders a very quick win and a 5-1 record on the season.
NGU was eld by Yomi Adeyeye who had 8 kills on the game. Haley Hester was also solid and was perfect for the game with six kills on six attempts. Ashlyn Wilkinson finished with 20 assists to lead all players while Hannah Lewis led all servers with five total aces at the service line.
The competition was a little stiffer in game two, as Truett McConnell, which the Crusaders played just three days prior jumped out to a quick 11-5 early in the first frame. The Crusaders recovered from earlier errors however and worked their way into a 16-15 lead, their first since leading 1-0 to start the game. The Crusaders led by as many as three, but the Bears hung around and eventually tied the frame 22-22. Truett would go on to take multiple leads but NGU finally grabbed the upper hand on a Kenzie Pierce kill which gave the Crusaders a 26-25 lead. The Crusaders would wrap up the frame with a Haley Hester kill which ended the set a 27-25.
The Crusaders turned it on quickly in frame two, jumping out to a very convincing 6-1 lead. Yomi Adeyeye was behind NGU’s quick start, pounding out three kills in the opening seven points. North Greenville’s 12-1 lead would be largest of the game thus far until the Bears found the board again to make it 12-2. The Crusaders would go on to take a 25-7 win, taking a 2-0 set lead.
The Crusaders continued its second set play in the third set, taking a 10 point 15-5 lead. The Bears cut the NGU lead to six with a 5-1 run which cut the North Greenville lead to 16-10. Rachel Burts put the rally to rest however with a kill which put NGU up 17-10. The Crusaders would go on a run of their own, outscoring the Bears 8-4 to take a 25-14 win.
Yomi Adeyeye finished up a solid night leading all scorers with eight kills. Rachel Burts also had a solid offensive set with seven kills of her own. James and Wilkinson had 10 and 14 assists for NGU while Hannah Lewis had an impressive 19 digs. Wilkinson also led NGU with four service aces.
The Crusaders will be back on the court tomorrow at 3pm to wrap up the 2014 Kickoff Classic against Benedict College.
