Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville volleyball team wrapped up the Crusader Invitational today with straight set losses to Lander (25-14, 25-18, 25-19) and Brevard (25-14, 25-23, 25-20).
The Crusaders faced a Lander team in game one which was picked to finish sixth in a competitive Peach Belt Conference. The Bearcats flexed their muscles in game one, taking a 25-14 set one win. The Bearcats jumped ahead of a youthful Crusader team 5-0 and never looked back. The LU Bearcats hit at a .391 clip in game one.
The Bearcats would come out on top in game two 25-18 to take a 2-0 set lead over Crusaders. North Greenville battled back in set three however and took their first lead of the match, leading by as many as six (13-7). LU would battle back however to tie the game at 17 before taking control. Lander would close out NGU on an 8-2 run to take the set and match 3-0.
Yomi Adeyeye led the Crusaders with nine kills on 21 attempts. Elizabeth James and Haley Hester both had six. Ashlyn Wilkinson was solid in the middle again serving up 26 assists while Codiann Amis had nine digs on defense. The Bearcats ended the tournament with a 3-0 record.
NGU looked to bounce back in the final game of the tournament against Brevard College but the Tornados did not cooperate taking a 25-15 set one win. The Crusaders took an early 2-0 lead could not hold as the Tornado stormed back to score seven unanswered points to take a 7-2 lead. The Crusaders worked on closing the gap, but a tough Brevard defense held North Greenville in check allowing just three kills at the net for NGU.
The Crusaders were unable to overtake the Tornados in set two, but stayed close to Brevard for the entire frame. The Crusaders trailed by as many as six during the second, but battled back to tie the game at 20. The Crusaders managed to gain a 23-22 advantage but two straight attack errors by the Crusaders would give Brevard the set two win and a 2-0 lead.
The Crusaders continued to fight in set three, and evened the tally at 10-10 after trailing 7-4 early in the set. Three more North Greenville errors gave the Tornados a 13-10 lead. BC would take a 20-13 lead before NGU closed the gap. A service ace from Codiann Amis sparked a run in which the Crusaders scored four unanswered to pull to within 17-20. A 5-3 Tornado run ended the set and gave BC a 25-20 set win.
Yomi Adeyeye and Courtney Adams let the offensive attack for the Crusaders in game two with seven kills each while Ashlyn Wilkinson dished out a team high 16 assists. The Crusaders pounded out four aces from the services line but also committed five service errors.
NGU fell to 1-2 on the season after Saturday’s double header action. The Crusaders will return to the court on September 11th when they travel to Clafflin University for a non-conference showdown scheduled for a 7pm first serve.
