Tigerville, SC – As the North Greenville University volleyball team celebrated its seniors, those more experienced athletes led the Lady Crusaders to a five-match 3-2 upset of Erskine College on Friday night in Hayes Gymnasium.
In the first set of action, the Flying Fleet gained an early lead that they never gave up in route to a game one victory by a score of 25-20.
The Lady Crusaders found motivation in the following two sets, winning each by a score of 25-21 to take a 2-1 match advantage into a deciding fourth set.
However, Erskine continued to give North Greenville problems at the net and sealed the game four win with a 25-21 score to even the match at 2-2.
In the fifth and final set, North Greenville and Erskine traded points until back-to-back kills by Rebekah Mayes and Kendra Meek gave the Lady Crusaders a one-point lead at 12-11. After the Flying Fleet evened the score at 12-12, North Greenville reeled off three straight points to secure the 15-12 set victory and match victory.
Seniors Kaitlyn Pierce and Kaitlyn Harris led the charge for the Crusaders on both ends of the floor. Pierce led the Lady Crusaders with an outstanding .342 kill percentage while racking up 16 kills in the match. Harris was North Greenville’s defensive leader with 31 digs in the game.
Meek recorded a double-double in the match with a team-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs, while Mayes also tallied a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. Madison Allen also had a strong defensive game with 10 digs, while setter Abigail Frame finished the game with 43 assists.
The Lady Crusaders (15-18, 5-12 in conference) will host their final match of the season tomorrow in Hayes Gymnasium when they take on Converse College at noon.
