Tigerville, SC- The Indians of Newberry College volleyball squad defeated the Crusaders of North Greenville University in three games in Hayes Gymnasium to break the Crusaders' two-game winning streak. The game scores were: 30-7, 30-27, and 30-10. The Indians remain undefeated at 6-0 while NGU fell to 2-9 on the season.
North Greenville started hot at the beginning of the first game, but slipped in the middle of the game, falling 30-20. In the second game NGU started sluggish falling behind early 10-3, and then battled back hard after Amanda Bouchillon (Anderson, SC) crushed the ball to tie the score at 17. NGU fought hard the rest of the way, losing a tough 30-27 game. A tired NGU squad surrendered 11 points early in the beginning of the third game and never recovered, losing 30-10.
Priscilla Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) each led the Indians in kills with 8 apiece. Sales was deadly with the serve, handing out 4 aces. Dani Hroblax (Lake Wylie, SC) also recorded 4 service aces. Kara Harris (Grandview, TX) was a beast on the defensive end recording 14 digs.
Lauren Hawkins (Mauldin, SC) led the NGU offense with 7 kills. Charissa Kee (Travelers Rest, SC) paced NGU with 3 service aces. Charlotte Swain (Woodruff, SC) led the defense with 12 digs, while Melisa Ragsdale (Greenville, SC) pitched in with 9 digs. Melisa Ragsdale also had 2 blocks.
NGU will visit Milligan College on September 15, while the Indians will play Catawba College at home on September 14.
