High Point, N.C. – Following the completion of the spring championships, eleven more student-athletes have been named as the 2017-18 Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports, Conference Carolinas announced today. This prestigious award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each sponsored sport for recognition of their outstanding performance both on the field and in the classroom, as voted on by the Student-Athlete Affairs Committee.
Candidates are submitted by member institutions for each of the conference’s twenty sponsored sports. To be considered for the honor, the student-athlete must have been named Academic All-Conference, which entails having attended their member institution for at least one full year and having reached junior or senior standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4-point scale. Scholar-Athletes of the Year must also be represented on their sport’s First, Second, or Third All-Conference Team, the rosters of which are chosen by coaches at the end of each playing season.
After an impressive indoor track & field season culminating in a trip to the Division II National Championships, Shekinah Wilder kept her momentum on the track rolling through the outdoor season. In her premier event, the triple jump, she marked six separate attempts over the Division II national provisional qualifying mark. Wilder earned All-Conference Carolinas honors in two events at the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track & Field Championships, finishing first in the triple jump and third in the long jump. A junior, Wilder holds a 3.73 GPA in her Interdisciplinary Studies major.
