Mars Hill, N.C.—The NGU men and women's tennis teams continued their fall schedule on Thursday night with a 5-4 win and 4-5 loss to the Lions.
The NGU women struggled a little more in doubles play as they claimed just one win. Maria Vargas and Kylie Sandusky earned the only win for the women in tandem play with an 8-4 decision to halt the Mars Hill sweep.
The Crusaders earned three wins in singles play but fell one win short as the Lions clinched the win with three singles victories. Camille Duhan, Sandusky and Ann Hayden Huxford claimed three singles wins for NGU. Duhan earned a 6-1/6-1 victory while Sandusky and Huxford won by scores of 6-3/4-6/10-6 and 4-6/6-1/10-6.
The NGU men earned their second win of the early season with their triumph over Mars Hill. The Crusaders earned two wins in doubles play to put themselves in position for their second win in October. Sergio Araujo and Jose Gomez got the ball rolling with an 8-6 win while Alejandro de la Torre and Edmundo Torres also scored an 8-6 win to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead as the teams moved to solo play.
The Crusaders picked up three more wins in singles play as Sjors van Eck bounced back from a doubles loss with a 6-0/6-1 win. Gomez and de la Torre also earned singles wins for NGU to clinch the match win with scores of 7-6/6-3 and 6-1/6-4.
The matches against Mars hill wrapped up the short calendar for NGU. The Crusaders will return to the court on February 13th to host Francis Marion University at 1pm.
