Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville Women's and Men's tennis teams raced the coming winter weather on Wednesday afternoon, scoring a couple of wins over Spartanburg Methodist College 9-0 and 8-1
The NGU women's team stormed out to a quick 3-0 lead after a dominating double's performance. Rebecca Beacham and Christina Kiessling got NGU off on the right foot with an 8-0 win to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Hartley Smith and Ann Hayden Huxford followed up with an 8-0 win of their own, while a forfeit in the third doubles match handed NGU the 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
NGU men's doubles teams also completed the sweep to give North Greenville a strong lead heading into singles play. Sjors van Eck and Sergio Araujo gave NGU a 1-0 lead after an 8-2 win in one doubles, while Santiago Robles and Alejandro de la Torre earned the 8-2 win to give NGU a 2-0 lead. Marcelo Yshikawa and Jonathan Stanga scored the sweep with an 8-3 win in the third set.
The Crusaders put together a strong performance in the first singles sets of 2015. Sjors van Eck wrapped up the first win of singles play with a 6-0/6-0 win while Santiago Robles earned a 6-1/6-1 win to make the score 5-1. Alejandro de la Torres would lock up the win for NGU in the fourth singles set with 6-1/6-0 win. Also earning singles wins for North Greenville were Marcello Yshikawa with a 6-4/6-2 victory and Edmundo Torres with a 6-2/6-1 decision.
The North Greenville women paired their doubles sweep with a singles sweep in an equally impressive win. The Crusaders held the Pioneers to just one point in all five of the singles matches played, the only point coming in the first set in which Rebecca Beacham cruised to a 6-1/6-0 victory. Christina Kiessling, Aline Ribeiro, Camille Duhan and Kelley Chapman all cruised to 6-0/6-0 wins while Ann Hayden Huxford was credited with the win after a forfeit from SMC.
Both teams are now 1-0 on the season after Wednesday's wins. Both teams will also host Wright State University on March 2nd at 3pm in the second match of the 2015 season.
