Sumter, S.C.—The North Greenville women’s tennis team opened up the fall half of its 2013-2014 schedule this weekend at the Conference Carolinas individual championships.
NGU’s Victoria Gomez and Haley Hardwick sprinted through the Group C bracket en route to a showdown in the bracket final in singles play. Gomez opened the tournament with a 7-5; 7-6 win over Barton’s Dana Kelly to advance to the second round, while Haley Hardwick breezed through her first round match with a 6-1; 6-3 win.
Gomez easily advanced past round two with a 6-1; 6-0 decision and earned her spot in the finals with a round three. Hardwick advanced to the round of four with a 6-3; 6-1 win over Kristy Lievense from barton and fought off elimination in the semi-finals with 3-6; 6-3; 6-3 hard fought victory to earn a spot in the finals against her NGU teammate.
Gomez would go on to take the Bracket C singles title with a 6-3; 6-1 win to finish a solid performance.
Also turning a solid individual performance for the Crusaders in singles competition was Maggie Elliot. Elliot earned a first round by, but advanced to the semi-finals in Bracket B with wins of 6-2; 6-1 in round two. Elliot dropped the semi-final match to Pfeiffer’s Hannah Watson ending her singles run.
Rebecca Beacham also earned a win in Bracket B with a 6-3; 6-3 round one win. North Greenville was unable to pick up a doubles win during the three day tournament. The Conference Carolinas Individual Championships wrap up the fall portion of the schedule for the Crusaders who will return to the court in competition on February 1st against Newberry College.
