Greer, S.C.—The North Greenville women’s tennis team earned crucial Conference Carolinas win on Saturday, bouncing the Lees-McRae Bobcats 7-2, to improve to 3-4 in league play, while also keeping pace in the playoff race.
The Crusaders quickly gained control of Saturday’s match, taking a 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles competition. NGU dominated the pairs play, as the Bobcats pairs failed to score more than two points in each game. Susane Lenz and Maggie Elliot got things started for North Greenville with an 8-1 win to open the match. The teams of Ribeiro/Beacham and Ann Hayden Huxford/Hardwick continued the doubles success with a pair of 8-2 wins.
NGU looked to clinch the match quickly in singles play, as the Crusaders carried a 3-0 lead into the final six games. Lenz got North Greenville off on the right foot with a 6-1/7-5 win, putting the Crusaders just one win away from the overall victory. North Greenville would wrap up the win with Aline Ribiero’s 6-2/6-2 win, but not before the Bobcats earned their first win of the day in the second position as Maggie Elliot fell 6-3/6-4 to Hillary Lutz.
The Crusaders would pick-up two more points in the singles portion of Saturday as Rebecca Beacham won a 6-1/6-1 decision and Haley Hardwick picked up a 6-0/6-1 win. LMC’s only other point of the day would come as Huxford fell in her solo match. The Crusaders now sit in sixth place in the Conference Carolinas standings, with two more league matches left. NGU will travel to Due West on April 16th for a league showdown with #1 Erskine, followed by the final regular season match of the 2014 season the following day against Converse College.
