Greer, S.C.—The NGU women’s tennis team fell to 2-16 on the season Thursday, after falling to Lander University 8-1, in non-conference tennis play.
Lander cruised through double’s play taking a 2-1 overall lead at the conclusion. NGU’s lone win came from Aline Ribeiro and Rebecca Beacham who defeated Courbis and Mello 8-6. The Bearcats picked up wins over Maggie Elliot and Susane Lenz (8-5) as well as Ann Hayden Huxford and Haley Hardwick (8-1).
The momentum from the doubles victories carried over into singles play as Lander completed the day sweeping the solo matches. Maggie Elliot proved to be stiff competition for her lander counterpart, but fell in the end 7-6/6-1. Ribeiro and Huxford both dropped decisions of 6-0/6-1 scores, While Beacham fell in her singles set 6-1/6-3. Haley Hardwick also struggled falling 6-0/6-3 while Susane Lenz dropped a 4-2 decision, but did not finish.
North Greenville will be back in action on Saturday, when Lees-McRae comes to Greer, South Carolina for a Conference Carolinas showdown with North Greenville. First serve is scheduled for 1pm at the Greer Tennis Center.
