Sumter, S.C. – The Crusaders fell short in their bid for a post season upset on Saturday, falling to the #2 seeded Limestone Saints 5-4 in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament, effectively ending the Crusaders’ 2013 season.
Susane Lenz and Maggie Elliott set the pace for the Crusaders in the first match of the day with an 8-5 doubles win over their Limestone counter parts Paige Palinkas and Jessica Reyes Varela. Limestone’s Segolene Ollivier and Julia Moreira tied the match in the very next game with an 8-1 win over Aline Ribeiro and Muriel Adib . Rebecca Beacham and Victoria Gomez would put the Crusaders 2-1 as the teams headed to singles play.
NGU looked to be headed for a first round upset after taking the first two singles decisions after Susane Lenz and Maggie Elliott’s singles victories put the Crusaders ahead 4-1. The saints then rallied off four straight singles wins to take the 5-4 decision after being one loss away from elimination.
The Crusaders, who return six of seven players next season, will finish the 2013 schedule with a 6-13 overall record and a 5-6 conference mark.
