CRUSADERS COME UP SHORT IN BID FOR UPSET OF 44TH RANKED USC AIKEN
Aiken, S.C.—The North Greenville men’s and women’s teams traveled to Aiken, South Carolina for a non conference showdown with the nationally ranked Pacers of the University of South Carolina Aiken. 

The 35th ranked men’s  team took a 6-1 decision from the Crusaders while the 44th ranked women’s team upended the Crusaders 6-2. The Pacer men swept the double’s matches. Hugo Chiarrocchi and Juan Vargas were edged 8-6 in their double’s matchwhile  Guilherme Ferreira and Sergio Araujo Filho fell 8-3. 

Hugo Ciarrocchi accounted for NGU’s lone win on Thursday in a 2-6/7-5/10-7 upset win over the 26th ranked individual player in the country Kevin Zerath. "I was very proud of Hugo,” remarked head coach Tomas Kurhajec. He was very confident on the court throughout the match. I was pleasantly surprised by his play today."
The Crusaders are now 1-4 over all on the season. 

For the women, NGU’s two wins came in doubles play. Susane Lenz and Maggie Elliot picked up their second straight doubles victory with an 8-6 decision over Shauna Williams Margot Simon of USC Aiken. Rebecca Beacham and Victoria Gomez also added a win to the board with a 9-7 win over Caityn Lawrence and Sabrina Tam. 
In singles, Haley Hardwick was edged in three sets by Kim Beyer 1-6/6-1/10-3. Muriel Adib was also clipped in three sets, dropping her singles match 6-3/3-6/10-8. 

“Our doubles play is improving greatly,” said Kurhajec. “We are hanging in with some very good tennis teams, and that is going to make us better as the season progresses. We have to learn to play with a little more confidence and stay positive.”

The Crusaders will travel to Hartsville, South Carolina on Saturday for a Conference Carolinas match with Coker College.
