Greenwood, SC – Looking to start the season off on the right foot, the North Greenville University women’s soccer program opened the 2013 season with a tough loss to #10 Lander University 8-0 on Thursday night.
The Bearcats scored their first goal just 21 seconds into the game, followed by another goal just after the two minute mark to gain the early 2-0 lead.
Lander would score four more times in the first half to take a 6-0 lead into the half before netting goals in the 48th and 66th minutes to earn the 8-0 victory to open the season.
North Greenville’s Katie Tate recorded five saves in the game as Lander totaled 26 shots in the game compared to just two by the Crusaders.
“Lander is a very talented team and we knew it would be a tough game,” said head coach Rachel Baer. “It’s hard starting the season with a loss but now we know what is required of us to play at the next level. We will take all we can from this experience to better us as a program.”
The Crusaders (0-1, 0-0 Conference Carolinas) will host in-state rival Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in Pepsi Stadium.
