Tigerville, S.C. – Looking to get back on track after a tough loss last week, the Lady Crusader soccer team took the field against Barton College on Wednesday. Two goals by senior Leah Ward helped North Greenville defeat Barton 4-1.
“We came out and played really well,” said head coach Jesse McCormick. “Overall it was a great team effort both offensively and defensively.”
The Lady Crusaders were in an attacking mode as soon as the game began outshooting the Lady Bulldogs 20-9. The 20 shots by North Greenville were taken by six different players as everyone on the team was involved in the game.
“We had some girls come off of the bench to get some playing time today,” said McCormick. “I’m excited to see a lot of different players getting involved and helping us improve as a team.”
North Greenville got on the board first in the games 10th minute when Ward scored her fourth in as many games after receiving and assist from midfielder Rebecca Stidham. The Lady Crusaders held the lead at halftime 1-0.
After some back-and-forth play, the Lady Crusaders scored another goal, this time from the foot of midfielder Krista Young. The goal by Young was assisted by Ward.
Ward and Stidham combined again for the game’s third goal in the 70th minute. Ward now has five goals in 2010 while Stidham has recorded four assists. Hayley Williams rounded out the scoring for North Greenville as she scored an unassisted goal in the 80th minute.
The Lady Crusaders are now 3-2 and will be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 25 against Palm Beach Atlantic. The game will be played on a neutral field in Atlanta, GA at noon.
