Laurinburg, NC – The North Greenville soccer team went on the road Tuesday to take on St. Andrews Presbyterian College. The Lady Crusaders used a strong second half to defeat the Lady Knights 4-2 for their first win of 2010.
“It was great to get that first win of the season,” said head coach Jesse McCormick. “We have a few things we still need to work on, but there are definitely a lot of good things happening.”
North Greenville and St. Andrews traded possessions in the first half with each team firing multiple shots but going into the half tied at 0-0.
Senior forward Leah Ward broke the tie early in the second half as she scored her first goal of the season in the 47th minute from the right wing.
After the early score, senior midfielder Hayley Williams took over scoring two goals, her first and second of the season. Goal number one for Williams came in the 54th minute as she worked her way into the box and scored the goal on an assist from senior midfielder Rebecca Stidham. Williams’ second goal came in the 71st minute as she found her way into the box once again and scored this time on an assist from sophomore midfielder Jade Salle.
After a goal by St. Andrews made the score 3-1, freshman forward Marguerite Motsinger scored her first collegiate goal to seal the victory for North Greenville. Stidham was in on another goal recording her second assist of the game.
“Today we got a lot of production out of a lot of different players,” said McCormick. “We have the ability to win a lot of games this season.”
The Lady Crusaders will be on the road again this Saturday, Sept. 11 in Franklin Springs, GA to take on Emmanuel College at 3 p.m.
