Tigerville, S.C.- Entering Tuesday, the NGU women’s soccer team looked to weather two storms, a front bringing rain to the upstate, and the Tornados of Brevard College. The Lady Crusaders entered Tuesdays match looking to add to a 3-1 record, the best of any team on campus.
The Crusaders seemed overmatched in the first 45 minutes of the game as the Tornados out-shot NGU 8 to 3. However none of the 8 shots on goal from Brevard reached the back of the net. The second 45 minutes of the game would more evenly matched. The Crusaders put 6 shots on goal and in the 50th minute a shot from junior Leah Ward would reach the back of the net for the first goal of the game with an assist coming from Kaeleigh Meara. Earlier in the match Meara missed putting the Crusaders up by one by mere inches as her penalty kick glanced off of the cross bar. One goal would be enough however as the Tornadoes were unable answer and Crusaders pulled off the 1-0 victory. Goalie Jessica Brinkley posted 5 saves for the Crusaders to help secure the win. “It was a good win for us over a good Brevard team” said head coach Jesse McCormick “it was good to get back to winning and the team played hard”. The Crusaders next contest will be September 12 at 2p.m. at Mt. Olive College in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
