The NGU women’s soccer team has blazed out to the fastest start in school history after two big victories last week.
The Crusaders, now 4-1 after an 8-0 romp over Kentucky Christian and a thrilling 2-1 win over Montreat on the road last Wednesday, will play a road contest against Brevard on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 4:00 p.m. Their next home game is Friday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 p.m. against Lander at Pepsi Stadium.
Coach Jesse McCormick said from the beginning that the big thing the team needed were frontrunners who could score goals. He seems to have found that in freshman Ashlyn Henderson (Atlanta, GA/Loganville Christian Academy). Henderson scored a hat trick with three goals in 17 minutes last time against Kentucky, and had five total goals last week. She has been nominated as the NCCAA’s athlete of the week by NGU.
Other goal scorers against Kentucky were Kaeleigh Meara (JR Greenville, SC/Mauldin) who had two second half goals, and Leah Ward (FR Waynesville, NC), Whitney Smith (JR Leeds, AL), and Bridgett Smith (SR Weaverville, NC) also added one goal each.
“The biggest difference this year is that we’re able to score goals,” McCormick said. “We have really come together as a group though and Ashlyn Henderson had a big week. A major contributing factor has been our defense. They have played very well together as a group and we have been defending very well. Jessica Binkley (JR Simpsonville, SC) has three shutouts this season, so we’ve made significant strides on both ends of the field.”
