The North Greenville University men’s and women’s soccer teams will launch their 2008 schedules Saturday, Aug. 30 at Pepsi Field on the NGU campus, and both squads are encouraged by the results from pre-season practice.
The Crusader women, behind new head coach Jesse McCormick, open a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. against Lees-McCrae at Pepsi Field, and the men squad, under head coach Chad Gfeller, will face off against Toccoa Falls at 5:00 p.m.
The NGU women will be led by midfielder Kaeleigh Meara (SO Greenville, SC) and goalkeeper Jessica Binkley (SO Simpsonville, SC). Other top players to watch are newcomers Ashlyn Henderson (FR F Atlanta, GA) and Leah Ward (TR-SO MID/F Charlotte, NC).
McCormick is excited about the possibilities for the Lady Crusader program. “I’ve been here three years and know the players, school, and program well,” notes McCormick. “I’m really looking forward to coaching this group of hard-working ladies and seeing what we can accomplish on the field and in the classroom. It’s a great situation to be in.”
“We lost six games in overtime last year and all we needed was a little more scoring punch up front,” he added. “We have a similar schedule this year and we now have the ability to win those contests.
The Crusader men will be led by senior Brandon Gilmore (MID Hampstead, MD), Kyle Walden (SR F Henderson, NC), and junior goalkeeper Dana Blackwell.
