Lightning strikes as Lady Crusaders fall

TIGERVILLE—The North Greenville University Lady Crusader soccer team lost a tough season opener Wednesday evening as they fell short to the Coker College Cobras 1-0. The first half of the soccer match was a struggle for both teams as they went into halftime with no goals on the scoreboard.

As the second half started, it was looking like the play of both teams in the first half was going to carry over into the second half, however, mother nature got involved. Just a little over fifteen minutes into the second half, at 34:55 scoreboard time, play was called due to lightning in the surrounding area. Both teams were told to move off of the field and to find shelter for what ended up being about a thirty-five minute delay.

Both teams came out of the delay to a wet and soggy field as the rain continued to about the half way mark of the second half. Just as the rain stopped, the Cobras broke the stymied match as Coker scored on a little dribbler that squeaked past the left side of the goalie, Jessica Binkley.

That proved to be all the Cobras needed as they held on for a 1-0 victory. Coker improves to a 2-0 record, while the Lady Crusaders fall to 0-1 on the season. The next game is scheduled for Saturday, September 1st as they play host to Palm Beach Atlantic University.
