Lady Crusaders win in overtime, advance to NCCAA Regionals

TIGERVILLE, SC- The Faulkner University women's soccer team would be traveling to Montgomery, AL regardless of whether they won today or not. North Greenville wanted to follow them home. The Crusaders and the Eagles were playing to qualify for the NCCAA Regional Tournament to be held on the campus of Faulkner University. Faulkner took an early 1-0 lead. Very early. Kara Kuhns scored on a breakaway just thirty seconds into the match. Despite taking a lot of shots, it took North Greenville thirty minutes to score. Ashley Jackson, who leads the team in goals this season, put on in with 15 minutes left in the first half.

The Crusaders would go on to outshoot the Eagles 35-1, but could not get another goal. Faulkner goalkeeper Kasey Gallea had 23 saves. "Their goalkeeper played an excellent game," said North Greenville coach Chad Gfeller. "She is probably the best I have seen at the college level, that we have played against."

After ending regulation tied 1-1, the Crusaders and Eagles headed for overtime. One overtime period was not enough, and the game went into a second overtime. Still tied 1-1, the game and each team's respective seasons came down to Penalty Kicks. Each team would get five shots with the winner going to the NCCAA Regionals and the loser going home.

North Greenville's Elizabeth Boone shot first. She kicked it left and on the ground past Gallea. Gallea would then turn around and be the first to kick for Faulkner. Her shot went wide left on the ground. Whitney Doublestein then made her kick with a low shot to the left. On Faulkner's secong shot, Crusader goalkeeper Alexus Robinson would deflect Kara Kuhns' shot to the right, but it bounced in just over the line. Down 2-1 in Pk's, Gallea deflected Tina Miller's shot. Then, Leslie Hudgens tied it up with a made goal on the right side. The two teams would exchange misses. Robinson made a great stop on the ground on Faulkner's fourth shot. Molley Franklin shot last for the Crusaders. Her shot went off the left post and into the goal. Faulkner's last hope hit the crossbar and the Crusaders won the match.

North Greenville will play Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Montgomery, AL in the first round of the NCCAA Regional Tournament. The men's team will play Piedmont College on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
