Elizabethton, TN – Despite playing in conditions that North Greenville University golf coach Jeff Pittillo described as ‘awful’, the Crusader women’s golf team played one of its best tournaments of the year in finishing fourth at the Don & Clarinda Jeanes Invitational.
NGU shot a 366-337 = 703 to place only four shots behind third place Tennessee Wesleyan (699).The course in Tennessee received two inches of rain following a windy and cold first round, and that was followed by rain, sleet and snow during the second round on the soggy golf course. Freshman Denise Shirley (Taylors, SC/Wade Hampton HS) led the way for the Crusaders with her best tournament of the year. She fired a 86-82 = 168 to finish in 6th place.
Shirley was at even par at the turn of the final round.Other top finishers for NGU included Regan Ouzts (FR Taylors, SC/Wade Hampton) 90-81 = 171 (12th), Anna Padgett (FR Mills River, NC/West Henderson) 91-85 = 176 (18th), and Taylor Threat (JR Lancaster, SC/Buford) 99-89 = 188 (28).
“The weather was absolutely nasty today, but we probably played our best round of the year,”Pittillo said. “Some really good things happened today. It was 40 degrees when we teed off today and just miserable, but we managed to play very well. This was a great way to finish up our first season, and we’ll anticipate a lot of improvement heading into next season.”
