NGU MEN AND WOMEN THIRD AT OWN CHEROKEE VALLEY INVITATIONAL

Tigerville, SC – The North Greenville University men’s and women’s golf teams both took third place in their own Cherokee Valley Invitational March 27-28 at the course just north of the NGU campus.  Lincoln Memorial out of Harrogate, TN easily out-distanced the field to take the championships for both men and women.


The Lincoln Memorial men, who are ranked in the top 30 nationally in NCAA Division II, took home the trophy with a one over par 577 (285-292), a 35 stroke victory over second place Tri County Community College (302-310 = 612). 

Coach Jeff Pittillo’s NGU Crusaders fired a 302 – 313 = 615 for third, Indiana Wesleyan was fourth at 310 – 307 = 617, Limestone was fifth at 308-314 = 622, and Mars Hill was sixth at 320-318 = 638.

Cory Bartlett of Lincoln Memorial took medalist honors with a scorching 67 – 70 = 137 (-7), which was eight strokes better than teammate Eric Kennedy (69-76 = 145).  LMU had six of their golfers finish in the top eight spots. 

The top individual finisher for North Greenville was Josh O’Neal who had a 73-80 = 153 (+9) for 11th place. 
Other NGU individuals included Danny Dippel (75-79 = 154, T 16th), Harrison Martin (78-76 = 154, T 16th), Andrew Beck (76-79 = 155, T 18), Chancen Blackwood (80-76 = 156, T 21st), Kyler Booher (79-79 = 158, 25th), Richard Harb (82-80 = 162, 31st), Jacob Harris (90-85 = 175, T 38), and Austin Green (89-90 = 179).

Lincoln Memorial’s women also won the Cherokee Valley with a dominating 309-318 – 627, good for a 56 stroke victory over second place Lenoir Rhyne (329-352 = 618).  North Greenville had a 357-356 = 713, Limestone came in a 347-368 – 715, Milligan College was at 371-362 = 733, and Mars Hill finished at 395-394 = 789.

Brittany McCown of Lincoln Memorial took top honors for the ladies with a 75-78 = 153 (+9).  LMU took the top four spots in medalist play.  McCown’s teammate Desta Coaker was second at 78-77 = 155, Maria Stapleton was third at 77-81 = 158, and Whitney Ball was fourth with a 79-82 = 161. 

The top individual for North Greenville was Denise Shirley who was 7th with a 83-82 = 164.  She was followed by Taylor Threat (88-92 = 180, 15th), Anna Padgett (89-92 = 181, 17th), and Reagan Ouzts (97-90 = 187, 20th).

Both Crusader teams have one tournament left for the 2010-2011 season.  The men will be at the Independent Collegiate Invitational in Etowah, NCZ April 11-12, and the women will finish up their first season at the AAC Spring Women’s Championship hosted by Milligan College in Elizabethton, TN April 3-5.
