Cullowhee, N.C. – North Greenville University Cross Country Team competed in its first race this season under new head coach Michael Bayne. The Crusaders traveled to Cullowhee, N.C. to compete in the Western Carolina University Invitational on September 2. The Crusaders raced against University of Florida, Western Carolina, and UNC Ashville.
The Crusaders men’s team placed 4th in the 5k invitational with John Shealy finishing 22nd with a 17:08 and Brandon Southern finish right after Shealy with a time of 17:48. The men’s team finished with an 18:01 average in the 5K race. Florida’s freshman Jimmy Clark won the race in 15:39. The Gators of University of Florida won the team competition.
The NGU Women’s teams placed 4th in the 2 mile race with average time of 14:39. Freshman Kelly Knutson posted the best time for the Crusaders, completing the course in 13 minutes and 43 seconds, giving her a 30th place finish. Florida’s Florence N’Getich won the race with a time of 11:02. The Gators took the women’s team title.
Coach Michael Bayne says, “He was very pleased with the effort of his team today”. The Crusaders will run in the first ever home cross country meet in school history on September 7 at Cherokee Valley Golf Course.
