Wingate, NC - The NGU men‘s and women‘s cross country teams traveled to Wingate, NC on Thursday to compete in the Wingate Invitational. Both teams finished fourth for the last regular season race of the year.
With three of the top runners for the women’s team injured and not able to compete, junior Samantha Mayo stepped up big time and ran a time of 21:45 finishing 11th overall. Senior Kaitlyn Joseph finished second for the team running a time of 23:40. Sophomore Laura Hopper ran a time of 25:06 for her first collegiate 5K race and sophomore Jill Forthaus finished as the team‘s final scorer.
Also hindered by injuries, the men’s team was forced to enter only six runners. The team was lead once again by sophomore Andrew Mosteller who ran a time of 17:37 and finished 13th overall. Freshman Ben Wade ran a time of 18:05 and was one place away from receiving a medal for finishing in the top 15. Freshman Jonathan Eastridge and junior James Lind ran well finishing within a second of each other and both placing in the top 20. Seniors Taylor Spence and Josh Putnam finished 5th and 6th respectively for the team in the only 5K race of the season for the men.
Assistant cross country coach Tomas Kurhajec had this to say about his team after the race, “I’m very happy with the way our team ran today. Our team is facing a lot of injuries right now and we had some runners really step up today. It is hard to expect big things from your team when you are missing five runners (three women and 2 men) who have competed in every race thus far this season. But I was very impressed with the way our healthy runners handled the adversity and put forth a strong performance. As a coach that’s all you can ask for, and for that I commend them.
The NGU men’s and women’s cross contry teams have finished all of the regular season races and are now deciding on whether or not to make a third trip to Charlotte, NC to compete in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championships on November 20th. Head coach Micah Sepko will announce the team‘s decision in the early part of next week.
